Metal Detectors Buyer’s Guide
What to look for when buying a metal detector
When buying a metal detector, the most important things to keep in mind are: What you’re looking for in terms of features, and know how much you’re willing to spend. Another very important thing to consider is what the metal detector will be used for. Beach combing? Treasure hunting? Prospecting?
If you’re new to metal detecting you should invest in a cheaper metal detector that will help you get stated without much configuration right out the box. If you purchase the higher end models, be aware that they require, and it's unlikely you will use most of the features early on.
If you have some experience with metal detectors, then purchase one that has searchcoils and crystal resonators specially designed for your intended purpose.
One of the most important features in a metal detector is the frequency. There are single frequency metal detectors and multiple frequency metal detectors. Multiple frequency metal detectors might be more useful for an experienced user because they tell you more about the location of the metal (for example, depth under ground).
Here are two examples of recommended metal detectors - one suited for beginners and one for more experienced users.
